Title:

Lohry family photographs

Abstract:

Photographs taken near the turn of the century presumably by a family member who was an amateur photographer. One snapshot is of Ross Lohry as a toddler, in a crib with a dry plate negative box. The photographer is possibly Willis W. Lohry, father of Ross, who resided at 1068 East 15th Street at the time of the 1900 census. Some later photographs may be by Ross Lohry. The collection includes a few studio and school group portraits of Ross's classes in Oakland, some large format (approximatly 5 x 7 inch, presumably from glass dryplate negatives) amateur landscape photographs of good quality, and many family snapshots (few identified). Also pictured are trains, dredges, construction and telegraph equipment apparently on a railroad line, sailboats, ships, homes, nature scenes and northern California landscapes, and camping scenes. Locations include the San Francisco Bay Area (mostly Oakland, some San Francisco and Golden Gate Park, some apparently in Crockett and the Carquinez Strait vicinity), at least one view of St. Helena, and other unidentified northern California areas. Some locations may be Colusa County, Calif., as Nicholas and Amelia Nelk, grandparents of Ross Lohry, are pictured on their porch in the town of Williams (--A box). A few double exposure trick photographs are present, with the subject posed twice in the same image (--PIC folder). Several images show a photographer with camera and tripod.
